Dussehra, also known as Dasara or Vijayadashami, is a significant festival in Hinduism that marks the triumph of Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana. The festival’s name is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (“ten”) and hara (“defeat”).

Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. Here are some regional highlights:

West Bengal Known as Durga Puja, it marks the end of the nine-day Navratri festival.
Gujarat Celebrated as the final day of Navratri.
Karnataka Known for its grandeur and opulence.
Tamil Nadu Celebrated as Kulasekarapattinam Dasara.
North India Celebrated as Ramlila, an enactment of scenes from Ramayana.

Andhra Pradesh Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. The celebrations include setting up Bommala Koluvu, an arrangement of small statues of characters from mythological stories. People worship the goddess at homes and temples. Huge idols of Goddess Durga Devi are placed and prayers are offered to her 9 different forms for 9 nights. The festival also includes Aayudha Pooja. There is also a huge fair (mela) with a rural feel, where artisans come from far and wide to sell their wares, and there are cultural programs and performances.
